A Just Transition for Waste Pickers: Solutions towards Inclusive Responsible Sourcing in Plastics Supply Chains
At the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5), in an effort to drive conversation and explore what a just transition for the informal sector would look like in practice, The Circulate Initiative hosted a session focused on the importance of recognizing the rights of waste pickers and implementing responsible sourcing practices through the Harmonized Responsible Sourcing Framework for Recycled Plastics.
The Circulate Initiative’s Senior Advisor, Ellen Martin, was joined by a panel of experts to discuss the need for collective action from governments, businesses, and supply chain actors to address human rights challenges and ensure the inclusion of waste pickers in national laws and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.
