This factsheet presents data on the performance of 34 deposit return systems (DRSs) worldwide. DRSs are proven to be more effective at recovering beverage containers than municipal curbside recycling programs. In Canada, provinces with DRSs recover 80% of non-refillable beverage containers sold, compared to 50% in provinces without DRSs. In states with active container deposit laws in the US, recycling rates range from 66-96%, while states without deposit return have a recycling rate of around 30%. Nearly every European country with deposit return for single-use beverages reports recycling rates over 85%.
