This article discusses the development of the TOPIC Toolbox, which was created to help decision-makers on islands select appropriate technologies and solutions to manage plastic waste. The toolbox was developed by combining a global assessment of plastic waste management on islands with a review of existing technologies that are suitable for island contexts. The recommendations provided by the TOPIC Toolbox are customized to the unique characteristics of each island, such as population size, amount of solid waste generated, plastic waste content, waste collection rates, seasonal variations due to tourism, and costs associated with waste transport and recycling.
